Now that we are in a New Year, it’s a great time to reflect on how far Pawling Recreation has come in a short amount of time! Since adopting our “Live, Work, Play, Pawling” mantra in 2018, we’ve been able to embrace so much of the good that comes from working together in all facets of the community.
When I began my role as Recreation Director in the Town of Pawling, one of my goals was for our department to be a solid reflection of this wonderful Pawling community. As we move forward into 2020, I am certain we’ve accomplished that and we are still improving in many ways, thanks to your support! Our Recreation Department has been able to offer a variety of opportunities and events for all ages, but the fun of setting this particular goal is that it’s ever changing…and that is exactly what keeps us on our toes!
Interests come and go, family dynamics morph, and seasonal priorities are always shifting. It’s our job as your Recreation Department to be open minded and willing to serve you and your families so that through recreation we can all grow into even more productive members of society, putting smiles on people’s faces as we go.
When I look back at a few specific examples of our own “Live, Work, Play, Pawling” dynamic, I see so many local community members who Live, Work, and Play in our wonderful Town, making things happen through relationships that positively affect our Recreation Department, so please allow me to give a few top “shout-outs” of the year!
Our entire Town Buildings & Grounds crew ensure that each day runs smoothly. They initiate indoor and outdoor projects, pulling together our big ideas so we can fully enjoy the grounds and park facilities we use. Joyce Krieger took the lead on creating a thriving Pickleball community of adults and they now play on our indoor courts at Lakeside Park 6 days a week. Mindy Levine graciously takes the time to chat about aligning big visions with action and who, along with husband Randy Levine, hit it out of the park with a gigantic Fireworks display at Pawling Community Day! John Morris and the Eastern Dutchess Road Runners Club make sure Pawling is represented on this side of the county in the sport of running and fitness. Their local group runs and races are not ones to miss. Bernard Daka at Village Pizza is always willing to whip up tasty pies for hundreds of campers and birthday parties during the year at a moments’ notice with a smile! Hannaford of Pawling always donates willingly to many of our events like the Pawling Triathlon, Halloween Party, Townsgiving, Community Day, and our race events throughout the year. Kim Fontana, Pawling School District Superintendent, continues to build positive working relationships through valuable communication between the Town, the Village, and the school. James Schmitt, our Town Supervisor, and his fearless assistant Jess Peterson always show support in person, around Town, and all over social media!
There are so many more than those listed who go out of their way to contribute to our Recreation Department because you take pride in where you Live, Work, and Play! I am grateful to come to work every day with an amazing team in an atmosphere that’s willing to grow through recreational opportunities. Parks and people matter. When we invest in others by supporting recreation, we ultimately invest in ourselves. Businesses thrive. Every generation enjoys a finer quality of life. Children in camp get to genuinely play, be outdoors, and disconnect from devices for a while. Young counselors gaining important leadership skills turn into socially competent and well-rounded adults ready to give back to their communities.
THIS is why we “Live, Work, Play, Pawling.” We can’t wait to continue serving you in 2020 as we move ahead with the community by our side! Our Recreation Office can be reached at 845-855-1131 and more information about programming is available at www.pawlingrec.com.
