Many Hands Help Stock PRC Food Pantry Shelves
Just after Thanksgiving, the Kennedy High School Student Council delivered a bus load of food items, weighing 2642 lbs. that the students collected. The “Sunday in the Country” group donated 40 turkeys and 30 chickens just before Thanksgiving. An additional 45 turkeys were donated by members of the community.
In addition to this holiday bounty, the PRC receives weekly donations from Pawling Hannaford, Brewster Acme (through Brewster Community food Pantry) and Trader Joe’s (through Putnam CAP). Volunteers pick up food, deliver to the PRC, and pack, refrigerate, freeze and shelve the wonderful variety of foods that are received through this generosity.
Once a month, the PRC orders food from the Regional Food Bank of Northeast NY, located in Latham, near Albany. Many of the local food pantries order from this same source. The Regional Food Bank packages and delivers the order, usually between 1200 and 1500 lbs. of food, to a location in Putnam Lake, from which local food pantries may retrieve their orders. The PRC is grateful to our local organizations and businesses that have the equipment needed to help with this retrieval process. The Pawling Recreation staff, the Pawling Highway Department, and George Apap Painting staff, regularly offer their time and assistance in this process by picking up these massive orders and delivering them to the PRC. Then, each month the PRIDE group from Pawling High School comes to help unpack and shelve this large order.
It takes many helpful hands to order, collect, pick up, deliver, store, and lovingly distribute the food on which so many of our neighbors in need have come to depend. The Pawling Resource Center celebrates our many volunteers and the spirit of giving that makes all that we do possible, especially during this joyous Season of Giving.
