October Recreation Spotlight

Pawling Recreation has come full circle over the past year. The summer season exploded with a new excitement at the waterfront since we added a giant waterslide, paddle boards, more kayaks, and American Red Cross swim lessons. Camp enrollment doubled in size, the sport of Gaga became a new tradition, and the Shed Haus Snack Shack was a favorite installment. As we ended the summer, Beach Bonfires became something to look forward to each Friday night in September with s’mores, family, and cool nights. The last Beach Bonfire featured a “Movie By The Lake” event, too! We certainly made the most of our time on the beach and we love making memories in the park with you.

A fresh vision for the Recreation Department together with the support of many community members encouraged more people than ever to invest their time at Lakeside Park. From season to season, you can expect the excitement to continue. We see the potential for recreational opportunities around every corner and we are constantly listening, as we aim to be responsive to the variety of needs in our community. As we approach Fall, we look back with fond memories and look ahead towards more growth!

Programs for youth are available at Lakeside Park in the form of after-school Rec Clubs, Amped for Camp Days when school is out, Flag Football, Next Generation Karate, and Mini Mingle Hour for toddlers and preschoolers to play inside if the weather becomes uncooperative or for a change of scenery with an indoor, interactive playground. We started hosting birthday parties for kids, too!

Engaging time for senior citizens is expanding with free activities. We are continuing our very popular Senior Luncheons each month. Every Tuesday at 9:30am, there is Recreation Craft Time at the American Legion next to Town Hall. Every Friday at 9:30am, we now invite folks to our Senior Game Days where we have word games, dice games, dominoes, and cards out for social enjoyment. Coffee and tea are always available and some decide to share baked goods or treats together.

Pickleball in Pawling has become quite a craze! With the implementation of creative indoor courts at Lakeside Park, there is always a chance to “catch the fever” of this growing sport. Pickleball meets on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays at 9:30am. Mostly popular in southern states, Pickleball is just starting to make its debut in the Northeast and is not disappearing anytime soon. The Recreation Department would not be able to manage this craze alone – assisted by passionate Picklers, this sport has found a home here. Even those new to the sport have created strong connections and lasting friendships. It’s a group like no other and coming together through the sport of Pickleball has added something extremely special to this community.

Other adult programming continues and we offer Yoga on Mondays at Lakeside, Co-Ed Volleyball each Tuesday & Thursday at Pawling Middle School, and Over 35 Basketball on Friday nights at Pawling Elementary School.

The Pawling Interact Club anticipates a great school year ahead and with newly elected officers, they are ready to hit the ground running. This group of 7th  to 12th grade students meets each Tuesday evening to discuss how they can affect their community in positive ways. By leading local initiatives and even being a part of something each year on a global scale, this extension of the Rotary Club has a lot to be proud of. They give so much of their time to meetings here in the park and service projects which prepare them to become strong leaders in any future direction they choose.

Many exciting events are coming up as we head into the Fall months! You do not want to miss our Halloween Party on October 26th, the Radio City Trip on November 10th, or Townsgiving on November 16.

Pawling’s Townsgiving on November 16 will be a very special event, as proceeds will generously support summer camp scholarships. Hosted right here at Lakeside Park, there will be a Kids Mile race, a 10k race through Pawling, and a feast – participants can register to race, feast, or…both! Prepared food items at the feast will be a showcase of the many flavors that make up the Pawling Community. Whether you choose to race or not, your Townsgiving experience will be a tasty one! During the feast, adult beverages will also be available on tap and in bottles such as Stella Artois, Angry Orchard Hard Cider, Mackenzie’s Seasonal Reserve, and Pumpkin Jack. Please make sure to join us as we come together to celebrate the spirit of giving in Pawling! Our Recreation Office can be reached at 845-855-1131 and more information is available at www.pawlingrec.com. Connect with us on social media @pawlingrec on Instagram and Facebook.
