Organizing for the Future

New PCSD Superintendent Kim Fontana was officially sworn in on July 2.

On Tuesday, July 2, the Pawling Central School District Board of Education convened for their annual Reorganization Meeting at Pawling Middle School. The meeting included a swearing-in ceremony for PCSD’s new Superintendent and two Board members, as well as nominations for the positions of President and Vice President of the Board of Education for the 2019 – 2020 school year. During the meeting the Board also welcomed the district’s new Assistant Superintendent for Instruction, Dr. Debra Kirkus.

To open the meeting, PCSD Board Clerk Peggy Generoso administered the Oath of Office to new Superintendent Kim Fontana, as well as the newly re-elected Board members Dr. Jeff Asher, Dr. Edward Grippe, and Harvey Matcovsky. Following their appointments, Board members unanimously voted for Dr. Asher to remain as Board President for the upcoming school year.

Following Asher’s appointment, the Board heard nominations for Deborah Klein and Karen Burka for the position of Vice President of the Board. To elect a Vice President, a majority vote is required. Following the collection of ballots, Burka and Klein received three votes each from the six members present. As a result, the Board will plan to elect its Vice President at the next meeting. “How lucky we are to have two qualified people willing to serve in this position,” remarked Board President Jeff Asher following the collection of votes.

During her remarks, Superintendent Fontana expressed gratitude to Board members, as well as a hopeful outlook for the district going forward: “It’s wonderful to have Dr. Kirkus here to lead our instructional programs. I know that the students and the staff will benefit from her experience. I want to thank Dr. Asher for once again serving as our President; I want to thank our returning Board members, and I think the whole community should be grateful for the commitment of this Board and their commitment to our students. The days since the last Board meeting have been filled with so many celebrations of our students, and staff members worked so hard to make everything lovely for them. And then there’s the community itself. At the Senior Awards Ceremony, 39 students were awarded more than $100,000 in scholarships. The gratitude we feel for that support is tremendous. I’m very grateful for that support.”

The next PCSD Board of Education meeting will be held on Monday, July 29 at 6:30 p.m. at Pawling Middle School, 80 Wagner Drive.
