Celebrating 40 years of scholarship giving, the Trustees of the Akin Hall Association Scholarship Endowment Fund fulfilled their mission by honoring the following top ten percent, academic achieving students in the recent 2019 Pawling High School graduating senior class with a total of $50,000 in awards. Five selected honorees were presented their awards at the June 15th “Moveable Feast” Reception at Akin Free Library with family members, school administration and community donors present. The five students and their awards were: Annamarie Leske attending North Carolina State University $10,500; Sean Walsh attending Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute $10,500; Brigid Barrick attending Tufts University School of Engineering $8,000; Carly McGrath attending SUNY Geneseo $8,000, and Garrett Watkins attending North Carolina State University $8,000.

At the Senior Awards night at Pawling High School on June 25, the following students were recognized with $1,000 Merit Awards towards their college expenses: Kaleigh Ainsworth, Veronica Bucci, Laura Kuhlmann, Kayla Nappi, and Laura Walker.

The Association was formed over 100 years ago by Albert J. Akin, a Pawling benefactor, who provided the Akin Free Library building and an endowment to promote and preserve the history, culture, spiritual roots and educational opportunities in the local area. The applications submitted were evaluated on their academic achievements, school and community activities, leadership experience, volunteer service, financial need along with weighted ranking on their personal essays.  The Committee selected five students to be interviewed and their scholarship awards were based on those interviews.

The committee is very proud of the selected students who are recognized this year. Their essays on what their community service has meant to them personally exhibited the values esteemed by the Akin Hall Association’s founder. The Scholarship Committee members are Akin Hall Association President Liz Allen, Scholarship Chair Betsy Brockway, Valerie Busby, David Daniels, Ross Daniels, Glen Carey, Stan Scherer and Terry Stewart.
