Pawling Library Showcases Documentary Films

May 31, 2019

Filmmakers Ron Steinman and Eileen Douglas presented

a special screening of The Dance Goodbye at the Pawling Library on May 11.

A special screening of the documentary The Dance Goodbye, which had aired most recently on PBS in November of 2018, was shown at the Pawling Library on Saturday, May 11. The library was very fortunate to have as guest speakers the creators of the film, Ron Steinman and Eileen Douglas who held a Q & A following the viewing. The filmmakers followed acclaimed dancer Merrill Ashley, who had departed from the New York City Ballet after a long and successful career, for a period a 10 years. What does a dancer do when the time comes to stop dancing? It is a difficult question all dancers must face and for many is unclear. This intelligent picture of a dancer’s world engages the mind as it touches the heart. Asked what they thought of the film, the audience responded, “Wonderful, beautiful, marvelous.” The Dance Goodbye was directed by Ron Steinman, produced and written by Eileen Douglas and Ron Steinman.

Ron Steinman will return to the Pawling Library as our host for a discussion following a screening of another PBS documentary entitled American Creed on Saturday, June 15 at 2:00 p.m. In the documentary, former US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and Pulitzer Prize-winning historian David M. Kennedy come together from different points of view to investigate the idea of a unifying American creed. Their spirited inquiry frames the stories of citizen-activists striving to realize their own visions of America’s promise across deepening divides. This film is not rated.

Mr. Steinman was at the Pawling Library a year ago for his first presentation, a discussion of his most memorable experiences at NBC News. He is the winner of Peabody Award, a National Press Club award, two American Women in Radio & Television Awards, and five time Emmy nominee.
