The Pawling School Board has been searching for the district’s new Superintendent for the last six months since Dr. Bill Ward gave the community the sad news that he was retiring this June, after six years at the helm. The Board hired a consultant service, School Leadership LLC (SL), to scour the United States for candidates who would meet the specifications developed by the community and school staff through open forums and a community survey. SL was chosen since they had previously identified Dr. Ward as a candidate.
The chance to become the next Pawling Superintendent attracted twenty-eight candidates. Fourteen were selected to be vetted by consultants, with applicants coming from as far away as Kansas and a number from New Hampshire. The Board approved six, excellent semi-finalists who were interviewed by the full Board during a jammed-packed weekend at the end of March. Interestingly, these diverse, semi-finalists all work in New York State school districts.
Following their interviews, the Board selected three finalists. The Board invited each finalist back for an informal dinner at the Board President’s home. During the dinner the candidates had a chance to sample what the Village of Pawling has to provide from area restaurants. The eight, participating restaurants were Family Quick Stop, La Guadalupana Mini Mart, McKinney & Doyle, Pawling Bread Company, Sunflour Bakery, Tacos & Cones, Village Pizza, and Vinny’s Deli & Pasta. More local restaurants wanted to share their fine food, but, sadly, there were only eight mouths to feed.
The Board is grateful to the Pawling community for its engagement with the process of the superintendent selection and looks forward to a continued partnership.
