PCMS Student to Raise Money for Suicide Awareness

April 25, 2019

PCMS student Rileigh Feery will be raising funds for suicide awareness

at an event in Mt. Kisco next month.

Pawling Central Middle School 7th grader Rileigh Feery is taking a tragedy and turning it into a lesson of humanity and generosity. Last year, Rileigh’s friend Shane Resnick took his own life at only 11 years old after having been bullied. Since then, Rileigh has become dedicated to raising money and awareness for suicide prevention. On Saturday May 4, Rileigh has planned “Slime Against Suicide,” an event that will not only raise awareness of suicide but will also help raise money for her friend Shane’s foundation, Shane’s Imagine-Nation. The event will take place from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Holiday Inn in Mount Kisco.

In order to procure the room at the venue for the event, a $1200 fee was required, and Rileigh was going to use money from ticket sales and pay out of her own pocket to cover the costs. When Shane’s mom Sandy learned of this, she created a GoFundMe account to ensure that Rileigh would not have to pay for her good deed. (To donate, visit GoFundMe.com and search: Slime Against Suicide – Kind Is the New Cool.) The event will offer a variety of slime activities, games, and raffles. There will also be contests for kids to bring in their own slime and compete in a variety of different slime categories. Rileigh will be donating $2 from each of her “slime” sales to Shane’s foundation, Shane’s Imagine-Nation. Additional information will be posted on the Shane’s Imagine-Nation Facebook page.

According to Shane’s mom, Sandy: “One day Rileigh reached out to me. I had never met her before, but she introduced herself telling me she had gone to school with Shane. She told me they used to talk a lot at school, because Shane ended up having the same locker she had used. She said that since slime is a ‘really big hit,’ she decided that she was going to have an event to honor Shane. The kindness and generosity pouring out of this child is something you cannot teach. Rileigh is special. I hope people come out, if only to recognize this amazing human being.”

Sandy has dedicated her life to promoting kindness and recognizing and rewarding kids who stand up and speak out against bullying. Shane’s Imagine-Nation is currently in the process of becoming a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that will promote kindness and empower kids to take a more active role in bullying prevention. The motto is “Kind is the new cool,” and if this is true, then Rileigh Feery is one cool kid.
