PHS Hosts Wonderful Wellness Day

On Saturday, March 9, the Health and Wellness Committee held its second Wonderful Wellness Day at Pawling High School. The Pawling Central School District event enjoyed support from many in the community, including a variety of businesses and the Pawling Recreation Department, led by Jessica Dickinson.

There were multiple activity and information stations that participants visited, including Gaga, a lively variation on the traditional dodgeball game. The “Try Together” station provided information about the annual Pawling Triathlon, which will be held on Saturday, July 13. The afternoon offered guests the opportunity to try a wide selection of activities. These included making healthy snacks, a family photo booth, yoga, dancing, mini-golf, and other fun things for kids to do with their parents.

One of the main attractions of Wonderful Wellness Day was Scooter City, which saw the PHS gym filled with different obstacles and games that kids completed while riding on scooters. A raffle was held with an assortment of prizes from local businesses that generously donated gift cards and merchandise, including Village Pizza, The Blue Olive, and Isabella Nail Salon. The support of local businesses is vital to the different events hosted by the Health and Wellness Committee.

Wonderful Wellness Day 2019 was coordinated by the PCSD Health and Wellness Committee, chaired by Ann Molloy. The committee includes elementary, middle and high school staff, interested community members, as well as middle and high school students. Student volunteers at the event included members of the Interact Club, Girl Scout Troop 10001, Varsity Dance Team and Peer Leadership volunteers. The students went out individually to many of the local businesses throughout Pawling to receive donations for the raffle, as well as assisting with setup and clean up at the event. Students also decided on the different stations featured at Wonderful Wellness Day, and they were in charge of coordinating the activities with the kids.

The Pawling Health and Wellness Committee promotes activities that support the District’s Health and Wellness policy. It champions the values of healthy eating, exercise, and lifestyle choices for the Pawling Central School District community through research, education, and the development and monitoring of school district policies and programs. Events like Wonderful Wellness Day are important to the committee members, who know that the easiest way to get younger kids active and excited about a healthy lifestyle is through fun events like this. Wonderful Wellness Day was specifically created to help get younger, elementary school-age children involved in and aware of fun ways to be active and eat well. The event was a large success, drawing in many kids who had a lot of fun completing the wide range of different activities and the different stations.
