Pawling Math Team Adds Up to Success
The Pawling High School Math Team is making its mark again this year. Three students have qualified for state competition: senior Brigid Barrick, junior Michael Bai, and sophomore Ditte Isak. This marks the fourth year that Pawling is sending someone to compete at the state level.
With the local math competition season now complete, Pawling’s Team A ranked third in the Dutchess-Ulster-Sullivan-Orange (DUSO) Math League, ending the season with 93 points. This is the fifth year Pawling has participated in the DUSO Math League. The team competed against 72 teams from 22 schools. Pawling Team A includes Brigid Barrick, Michael Bai, Ditte Isak, Ryan Maasz, and Sean Walsh.
“Math Team has taught me a lot, not only about math but also about building friendships and having fun,” observes Michael Bai. “The Pawling ‘A’ team to me is my family, and the friendships and memories that we have formed are unforgettable.”
“My experience with being on Math Team is that sometimes you do well, and sometimes you don’t, but you always get pizza,” quips Brigid Barrick.
Back in November, Pawling High School had a first place finish for the first time in its history at the DUSO Math League Math Meet, which was held at Pawling High School. Barrick was the only student at the meet to answer all six questions correctly in a field of 70 students.
Final standings for individual scores will not be available until the end of the month. However, three students have the potential to be eligible to participate in this year’s New York State Mathematics League (NYSML) competition, which will be held at Middletown High School on Saturday, April 6.
Mathematics teachers Nicole Johnson and James Agostinelli, serve as moderators of the team. “This was my first year co-advising Math Team with Nicole Johnson,” says Agostinelli. “It is great to see students have the opportunity to work through such tough math problems under time constraints and with the pressure of competition. The team had a successful season with strong results in five competitions. Mrs. Johnson and I are very proud of them all for their hard work and success.” [if !supportLineBreakNewLine] [endif]
