On Monday, March 4, the Village Board met for its first meeting of the month at Village Hall. The evening’s agenda included a discussion of Village Planning Board fees for the municipal B-1 District. The Board passed a resolution intended to benefit local businesses. The Board also approved the purchase of a new parking meter for the Metro North lot, and announced dates for an upcoming parade and bulk pickup.
In a move designed to benefit existing and new businesses in the Village, Trustees discussed the fee structure required by the Village Planning Board for site plan reviews. Previously, fees for a site plan approval were a flat rate of $3,000 per project, which several local business owners believed represented an oversight. In response to inquiries, the Village Board voted to restructure site plan approval fees to a sliding scale based on the overall cost of each individual project.
Under the new fee structure, projects with a total cost of $25,000 or more will still be charged the $3,000 site plan approval fee. However, smaller projects with a cost less than $25,000 will now be charged $1,500. The fee structure was further amended to include revisions at a cost of less than $3,000, which will only be charged $500 for site plan approval. “We believe this is a much fairer system, which will still cover the cost of work done by Village employees,” said Village Trustee Dan Peters.
The resolution was met with approval from local business owners, who praised the Village Board for its decision. “They realized something was wrong, and they fixed it quickly,” said Ben Christgau, owner of the Tap House Tavern and Tacos & Cones, both located in the village. “By reducing the fee structure, they really enable business development.” Christgau is planning to add a gazebo to allow more outdoor seating at Tacos & Cones this spring, and believes that the Village Board’s decision demonstrates its support to encourage small business development. “The eagerness to help was there,” he added. “The Board wants to help owners to reinvest in their businesses. There’s so much positivity going on.”
In other business, the Board approved the purchase of a new parking meter for the Metro North lot at a cost of $21,370.86. The new meter will allow commuters a variety of options for payment and will accept both cash and credit cards. Eventually, the new system will also incorporate a Pay by Phone option, which has provided convenient payment options in several surrounding municipalities.
In closing business, Village Trustees approved the Village Green and Public Events Permit application for Pawling Little League’s Opening Day Parade, scheduled for Saturday, April 27. The Board also announced this year’s bulk pickup, to be held on Thursday, April 4.

The next Village Board meeting will be held on Monday, March 18, at 7:00 p.m. at Village Hall, 9 Memorial Avenue.
