BoE Begins Search for New District Superintendent, Announces Change in STAR Program Application Process

On Monday, January 7, the Pawling Central School District (PCSD) Board of Education convened at Pawling Elementary School for its first meeting of the new year. The session included important announcements regarding a change in the application process for the New York State School Tax Relief (STAR) Program and the search for a new district superintendent.

Residents seeking to take advantage of the Enhanced STAR property-tax break in 2019 will need to apply/reapply using the new Income Verification Program. (Homeowners will only need to enroll once and will receive the exemption each year afterward, as long as they are eligible.)

The 2019 property tax benefit applies to homeowners age 65 and older with an annual income of $86,300 or less. To qualify, homeowners must submit the STAR enrollment application form to the Town Assessor by Friday, March 1, so the benefit can be applied to school property taxes in the coming year.

Once the application has been submitted, the Town Assessor will verify each applicant’s eligibility based on the income information provided. In ensuing years, the state department of taxation will continue to verify income. More information and income verification forms can be obtained at www.Tax.NY.Gov/Pit/Property/Star/ online.

In October, it was announced that PCSD Superintendent William Ward would be retiring at the end of the current school year, marking the end of his five-year tenure in Pawling. Dr. Ward’s final day is scheduled to be July 12, and the Board of Education has initiated the search process for selecting the district’s next superintendent.

The Board of Education will be holding two open forums later this month to gather comments from Pawling residents. The community is invited to meet with PCSD Board members and district officials on Monday, January 28, from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. in the multipurpose room at Pawling Elementary School, or Tuesday, January 29, from 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. in the Pawling High School library.

Attendees at the meetings will also have an opportunity to meet with representatives from School Leadership, LLC, which has been assisting the Board in its administrative search process.

The next Board of Education meeting will take place on Tuesday, January 22, at 7:30 p.m. at Pawling Elementary School, 7 Haight Street.
