This past season, a number of teams from the Pawling Central School District achieved great success on the field. The Pawling Tigers Varsity Football team completed their first season in the new 8-man format, the Varsity Boys Cross Country Team won their 17th League Championship in 18 years, and the Varsity Field Hockey team captured the Class C, Section 1 Championship following an amazing playoff run. In addition, a number of players from various teams were given honors at the Varsity Fall Sports Awards Night on Monday, November 19.
In the first season of the new 8-man format, the Tigers squad finished the season ranked #5 in New York State, and earned the title of League Co-Champions of the newly established NYS Combined Section 1 and 9, 8-man league. The team would amass an impressive 7 – 1 record, with wins over Fallsburg, Sullivan West, Tri-Valley, Eldred, Downsville/Roscoe, and Dover. Bret Giannantonio was named Most Valuable Senior, and Quinn Clowry was awarded Most Valuable Underclassman.
Varsity Cross Country
Varsity Boys’ Cross Country captured their 17th League Championship in 18 seasons, and the Varsity Girls’ team fell only two points short of a League Championship. Both squads also earned an opportunity to compete in the NYS Qualifier at Bowdoin Park on November 3. Most Valuable Senior was awarded to Garrett Watkins, and Most Valuable Underclassman Honors went to Noah Brightman and Julianne Hickey. In addition, Noah Brightman, Alex Petruso, and Julianne Hickey received All County Honors, and Caleb Brightman, Michael Colombo, Garrett Watkins, Julianne Hickey, Juliet Governale, Lana Ranghelli, Abigail Lewick, Noah Brightman, and Alex Petruso were named All League.
Varsity Boys’ Soccer
The Tiger squad finished with a record of 8 – 7, culminating in an appearance in the Section 1 tournament. Entering as the #13 seed, the squad would drop a hard fought game to Blind Brook. Most Valuable Senior was awarded to Brian Beehler, and Alex Reda was named Most Valuable Underclassman. All Section honors went to Andrew Beck, while Brian Beehler, Ryan Fitzsimmons, Mason Watkins, and Joseph Castellano were named All League. All League Honorable Mentions were also given to Ryan Maasz, Iliass Elidrissi-Elamrani, John Belmonte, Jack Slattery, and Matt DiVitto.
Varsity Girls’ Soccer
The Varsity Girls’ Soccer team finished with a combined record of 7 – 6 – 2, earning a sport in the Class B, Section 1 Championship tournament. The squad played competitively all season, despite being moved up in class and playing a strong schedule against larger schools. Ultimately, Pawling would fall in the first round of the playoffs, losing 1 – 0 to North Salem. Abby Savarese was named Most Outstanding, and Morgan McCarthy, Sofia Carrozza, Abby Savarese, and Annie Bekkelund all received All League honors.
Varsity Field Hockey
The Varsity Field Hockey team finished the season with a record of 6 – 3 – 3, earning the sixth seed in the Class C Section 1 Championship. The Tigers would pull off upset victories over Pleasantville, North Salem, and Section 9 Champion Taconic Hils. The team would fall just short against Hoosick Falls, losing 1 – 0. All Elite team and All Section honors were given to Ava Panzer and Courtney Adams, with Frankie Fleming receiving an All Elite Honorable Mention. In addition, Ava Panzer, Courtney Adams, Frankie Fleming, Isabela Santiago, Carly McGrathy, Kiera Tucci, and Kendall Arnold all received All League honors. Elena Mejorado, Chloe Agopian, Ella Blue Jackson, and Sara Corbi were also given All League Honorable Mention.
Varsity Girls’ Volleyball
The Tiger Volleyball squad placed third in the Pawling Invitational, which included teams from Class A, B, and C. The team recorded seven wins en route to an appearance in the Class C Section 1 tournament where they upset fourth seeded Yonkers Montessori Academy before losing to eventual Section 1 Champions Valhalla. Grace Heubel was named Most Valuable Underclassman, while Laura Kuhlmann received an All Conference Honorable Mention, and Laura Kuhlmann and Emily Wall were named All League.
Varsity Girls’ Tennis
The Varsity Tennis team featured a dedicated group of players during a rebuilding season. Led by co-captains Veronica Bucci and Elizabeth Klein, the squad competed against schools from Westchester and Putnam counties, and coaches praised their high level of competitiveness and sportsmanship. Veronica Bucci was named Most Valuable Senior, and Allison Clisby was given Most Valuable Underclassman Honors.
Hall of Fame Inductees
The 11th annual PCSD Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony was held on Tuesday, November 20, at Pawling High School. This year, the ceremony would honor the League Champion 1966 Pawling Football Team, long-time coach Louis Lattrell, and student athlete Margo Hackett.
