NEW BUSINESS IN TOWN: Equilibrium
A new yoga studio is coming to Pawling when Equilibrium opens on November 3. Owner/Instructor Lorraine Landau, a new resident to Wingdale, will not only be offering a wide variety of yoga and fitness classes for all ages, but she will offer counseling services and Reiki. She also plans to organize community events around hiking, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing.
Landau holds a Master’s Degree in Applied Human Development and Counseling from Teachers College, Columbia University, and is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor. “My background is in psychotherapy and family counseling,” says Landau. “I practiced privately, but was also a guidance counselor in bilingual education in Cambridge, Massachusetts, followed by a position as a career counselor for the handicapped in New York City.”
Later, Landau began teaching classes in a local gym and community centers for fun. “I was always a long-distance runner, however injuries became a problem” she says. “That’s when I decided I needed a new format. I began to teach yoga, Pilates, Barre, and cardio classes including water aerobics, cycling, and WOWing. I got into a whole new dimension after the running, and this became a passion, which I want to bring to Pawling.”
Classes offered at Equilibrium will have an emphasis on improving alignment, balance, strength, core stability, endurance, agility, and mobility. Landau is also confident that the sessions at the studio will dramatically impact athletic performance, as well as counteract tight muscles and musculature imbalances.
When Equilibrium opens, Lorraine Landau and instructor Samantha Lehnert will offer a variety of classes for all ages and skill levels. The list includes Yoga Fundamentals and Gentle Yoga, and Vinyassa Flow for those who prefer more vigorous movement centered on flowing in and out of postures. All genres will involve participants learning to link breathing and movement to build strength, flexibility and endurance. Instructors will focus on diverse music for stretching and relaxation. Students can use props to aid with poses they ordinarily are unable to do because of physical restrictions or injuries.
In addition to the mix of courses, Equilibrium will offer mind and body counseling, both individual and group sessions, as well as Reiki. Reiki is a Japanese stress reduction and relaxation technique that promotes healing through the manipulation of “life force energy,” to improve physical and mental health. Landau also aims to make use of Pawling’s natural surroundings for community events.
When Lorraine Landau scouted locations to open her studio, she knew she had found her home in Pawling. “I thought this was a really different kind of community,” she explains. “It is a tranquil, peaceful environment with great assets and right in the middle of natural surroundings.”
Equilibrium will be located in the Pawling Commons shopping center at 63 East Main Street. Lorraine Landau plans to hold a free day at the studio on Saturday, November 3, featuring free classes and meditation sessions from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. In the coming months, she hopes to share her experiences with a healthy lifestyle with the community. “I’m probably stronger now than I was in my thirties, because I found a smarter way to work out,” Landau says.
