Autumn – There’s an App for That

Oh, autumn! Wonderful autumn. Another year wrapping up in vibrant colors and cheery holiday festivities. Whether it’s walking to view the leaves, pumpkin picking, Halloween, or wonderful Thanksgiving, there is so much to do and enjoy. There’s an app to help with finding, planning, and doing them all. The apps that are mentioned below are available for both Apple iOS and Android, but there are many, many more. Search the app store for your device – Windows, Mac, Android, or iOS – whenever you get an idea for a family activity. There’s always something out there.

Autumn Foliage

Foliage-following apps are a natural, and there are many options. Happily, Yankee Magazine (the go to expert, right?) has published an app for finding the ideal trees with “Leaf Peepr” (free for iOS and Android). “Leaf Peepr” crowd-sources foliage reports, complete with photos, comments and a slider to rate the color of the leaves. And remember the “PlantNet” app if you want to identify the trees that you’re admiring in autumn splendor.

Cooking and Recipes

Again, there are many, many apps for meal planning and prep. One that has turned into a favorite is “BigOven.” It contains tens of thousands of recipes, searchable by ingredient, topic or occasion. You might find new dishes, or just the right reminder for how to perfect your own fall favorites in BigOven. This app also has a menu-planning helper, and a grocery list maker.

Pumpkin Carving Ideas

I haven’t found any apps that actually tell you how to carve a pumpkin, because who needs that? But there are apps that let you virtually carve a pumpkin and get some ideas for your Halloween masterpiece. On iOS (for iPhones and iPads) only, Parents Magazine has published “Carve-A-Pumpkin.” Unfortunately it isn’t on Android yet, but on this app you can find a “Pumpkin Carving Ideas” app with ideas and patterns to follow. This app also contains a game for youngsters, simply titled “Pumpkin Carving.”

Fitness for Charity

If you’re just out looking at leaves, or if you’re diligently walking off the Thanksgiving calories, take a look at “Charity Miles.” This app doesn’t time you or guide you through exercise, but it does encourage it in another way. “Charity Miles” gets you linked up with a wide range of charities and lets you earn for those charities by walking, running, biking, or just moving for yourself. You just download the app and choose one of the charities to support, then track your walks or bike rides. Every mile will earn money for your chosen charity. Cool. And thankful.
