Pawling Library Presents Program on Alzheimer’s Disease

October 13, 2018

Recently, a library patron shared with us that her spouse has been experiencing memory difficulties and inquired if our library might arrange for a program that dealt with this issue. Following our conversation, we reached out to Community Engagement Manager Joan Carl from the Hudson Valley Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association and scheduled the presentation, “The Basics: Memory Loss, Dementia and Alzheimer’s Disease,” which took place on Wednesday, August 29, at the Holmes Whaley Lake Civic Association Building.

It is hard to believe, but sadly true, that every sixty-five seconds a person living in the United States is diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. Carl’s program covered an extensive amount of information about Alzheimer’s and dementia, along with the steps one can take from diagnosis to treatment. She also discussed services available for both patients and caregivers. Carl supplied each attendee with an information packet, and more informative leaflets were also on hand.

Following her presentation, several people lingered to ask questions that were too sensitive to be shared with the larger group. Joan Carl was there to help anyway she could. Carl was not only an exceptional speaker, but one with great heart, as well. The Pawling Library thanks her for sharing her knowledge and expertise with our community, and we look forward to welcoming her again.

The Pawling Library has been collaborating with the Holmes Whaley Lake Civic Association in presenting quality programs to our community. Another program, “Healthy Living for your Brain and Body: Tips from the Latest Research,” presented by Joan Carl, will take place on Friday, November 2, from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Holmes Whaley Lake Civic Association. The program is free to the public and provided by the Alzheimer’s Association.
