Local tourism made a great stride forward last month when The Station Inn opened the doors on its newly expanded establishment at 7 Memorial Avenue. Originally opened for business in 2017 with two rooms available for rent, the inn now offers ten rooms for guests to enjoy a stylish stay while they explore everything Pawling has to offer.
The concept for The Station Inn began more than seven years ago. “At the time, the Village Green was just coming into fruition,” explains Dave Daniels, co-founder of the inn. “The idea was to turn the property into something that enhanced the community.”
The decision to turn the property into an inn would come during a jog through Pawling by Daniels and co-founder Bill McGuinness. “Dave called me and said he had an idea for an inn,” recalls McGuinness. “We go running together, so I told him we would discuss it then,” Although he was initially skeptical about the idea of turning the property into an inn, the jogging conversation quickly changed his mind. “We started running down Memorial Avenue, and by the time we reached the corner of Smith Street he had me convinced,” says McGuinness. “It was an idea that came from his heart.”
With the decision made, Daniels and McGuinness also quickly decided on a name that would pay tribute to both Pawling and family history. “The train station came to Pawling in the mid-19th century, and soon after The Station Restaurant opened up,” says Daniels. “It was a popular restaurant for locals and visitors alike. Relatives on my father’s side actually owned it initially, and my mother’s father eventually bought it. So both families actually owned it at one point. The restaurant became the genesis for the name of the inn.”
The building, which overlooks the village just south of the Metro-North train station, has seen extensive renovations. “We stripped it down to the studs – it’s like a new building,” says McGuinness. The process of rejuvenating and expanding the property would include new windows, HVAC systems, bathrooms, and patios. The owners would next explore options for the layout and amenities of the inn. “We had to see how many rooms we could fit in comfortably, and everything clicked together really easily,” adds McGuinness.
The Station Inn offers three room options. Standard rooms feature plush queen-size beds; larger deluxe rooms are available with either king- or queen-size beds, and junior suites feature king-size beds and love seats and can accommodate up to four guests. Each room features a private bathroom with a walk-in shower, free wi-fi, air-conditioning, and a flatscreen television complete with cable and Netflix.
Guests will be able to book rooms online and access the building through secure electronic locks. Dedicated innkeepers will be on-call to provide concierge services, recommendations, and assistance with transportation to local attractions. “We’re going to do everything we can to help promote local businesses and allow our guests to enjoy every aspect of Pawling,” says McGuinness.
Now that the newly expanded Station Inn is open for business, Dave Daniels and Bill McGuinness are excited to be a bigger part of commerce in Pawing.
“One of the great things is that the kind of strip development that killed so many small villages didn’t hurt Pawling,” explains McGuinness. “People still come off the highway to do things in the village just like the locals. This has remained a true railway town, and it’s exciting to see all the new businesses opening up here.” For more information, visit StationInnPawling.com online.
