Halfway through its first season, the Dover Farmers’ Market is proud to announce that, since its opening weekend in June, the market has steadily grown both in the number of visitors and participating vendors. The vendors have reported that they hear a lot of good buzz about the Dover Farmers’ Market when they are at other markets and inquiries about joining the market come in from new vendors almost on a weekly basis.
The Dover Farmers’ Market was founded by Solutions for a Better Dover, a “community run, get it done” organization aimed at providing Dover residents with a platform to transform ideas to benefit the community into a reality.
Early in 2018, Pattie Camillone, owner of WholeyOats Granola, enthusiastically embraced the idea of a farmers’ market in town and stepped up to become the founding chair of Solutions for a Better Dover’s Farmers’ Market Committee. Thanks to Camillone’s – and her dedicated committee members’ – hard work, the Dover Farmers’ Market opened on Sunday, June 17, with eleven vendors to a very welcoming community. Gary Young, who visits the market with his wife Lynn almost every Sunday, commented on Facebook that “it feels good to have the Farmer’s Market part of the rhythm of our lives now. We appreciate the vendors and are grateful to those who toiled to make this all happen.”
Camillone was motivated by the need she saw in Dover “for fresh food as well as a welcoming space for all to come together and enjoy what our local farms and small food producers are growing and creating. There are so many talented farmers, small food producers and artists in our community, and the market is a great place to showcase their gifts.”
Vendor Mara Shelby, owner of Falconwood Farms, agrees: “We are very grateful that Solutions for a Better Dover has put together the Farmers’ Market! We have been having so much fun giving our neighbors a taste of our honey and watching their reactions, and our sales have been super.”
Camillone reports that vendors who participate at the Dover Farmers’ Market are chosen carefully. “We pride ourselves in saying the majority of our vendors are local, meaning they are from Wingdale and Dover Plains. You cannot get any more local or fresher than that!”
Shelby adds, “It’s great that the folks in our town (and tourists) have a place to buy locally sourced fresh veggies and flowers, meats and cheeses, and maple products.” Those maple products come from vendor Soukup Farms, which has been creating maple products in Dover Plains since the 1950s, including one particular product that many market patrons, not to mention vendors, including Shelby, have found to be quite addictive. “On the plus side, I get Soukup Farm’s Maple Cotton Candy every Sunday,” Shelby says. “On the minus side, I need Soukup Farm’s Maple Cotton Candy every Sunday!”

The Market also has drop-in vendors including Dykeman Farms (produce) and The Corgi Kitchen (baked goods).
The Dover Farmers’ Market is open every Sunday, from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., through September 30, 2018.
