On Wednesday, June 27, Antonio Delgado claimed the Democratic nomination after a hotly contested race in New York's 19th House District. Delgado won with twenty-two percent of the vote in the eleven-county swing district. In November, he was will challenge Republican incumbent John Faso. The District includes all of Columbia, Delaware, Greene, Otsego, Schoharie, Sullivan and Ulster counties, most of Dutchess County, and parts of Broome, Montgomery, and Rensselaer counties.
The Democratic primary would see voters choose among seven candidates vying for the opportunity to challenge John Faso for the chance to become the U.S. Representative for the 19th Congressional District. Ultimately, Delgado garnered 7,690 votes, followed by Gareth Rhodes (6,242 votes), Pat Ryan (6,194 votes), Jeff Beals (4,608 votes), Brian Flynn (4,608 votes) David Clegg (3,873 votes), and Erin Collier (1,700 votes).
“I first want to congratulate my colleagues, Jeff Beals, Dave Clegg, Erin Collier, Brian Flynn, Gareth Rhodes and Pat Ryan,” Delgado said in a statement. “You all ran tough, good-natured campaigns and worked hard to give the people of this region an incredible selection of candidates to choose from.”
Antonio Delgado, a native of Schenectady, NY, is a 41-year-old attorney currently residing in Rhinebeck. His campaign focused primarily on universal, affordable healthcare, but also expressed his intentions to address infrastructure, education, and the environment. In a statement, Delgado claims to be running “to bring the values of hard work, character and integrity to our politics and be an advocate for equality and economic opportunity for our region.”
Delgado also said in a statement to the Poughkeepsie Journal: “As I have traveled to every part of this region over the last year and a half, I have heard the stories of struggle, of people feeling like they are being pushed into the margins, left behind and forgotten. It’s time to turn that around and work hard for universal, affordable quality healthcare for all, to bring good jobs back to the Hudson Valley and the Catskills, and to create an economy that works for all of us.”
In a press release, Faso said: “I congratulate Mr. Delgado on his victory in the Democratic Primary Election. I look forward to a spirited General Election campaign.”
