Kent Art Association Announces Elected Artist Award Winners - Holmes Artist Puiatti Has Solo Show
Michael Spross of Millbrook receives the KAA Award of Excellence from KAA president Connie Horton for his oil painting, “Halcyon at Rest” (Bennett College).
On Saturday, May 26, the Kent Art Association (KAA) opened the fourth show of its 95th season. The Elected Artist and Solo Artist Show opening was well attended and visitors were treated to a smorgasbord of exciting artwork created by the Association’s Elected Artists. An Elected Artist is one whose work has been voted on by their peers as having consistently met the high standards set by the Association since its inception in 1923.
Three artists were presented with awards at the opening reception. KAA President, Connie Horton presented Michael Spross of Millbrook, with the KAA Award of Excellence for his oil painting “Halcyon at Rest.” Clayton Buchanan of Newburgh was awarded The Ridgewood Art Institute Award of Excellence for his pastel “Of the Streets,” and Trisha Soliday Haulenbeck of Northfield, CT, was awarded Best in Show for her Watercolor “Rhapsody of Waves.” Judges for this show were award-winning artists Tom Franken and Karen Bahrenberg. Mr. Franken is known for his bold and dynamic modernist paintings and Ms. Bahrenberg for her beautifully rendered pastels.
Showing in the first floor Aiken Gallery is the Solo Show artist, Linda Puiatti of Holmes, winner of Best in Show in the 2017 Presidents Juried Show. Working primarily in oils, Ms. Puiatti uses light and shadow to create atmosphere and mood as she captures a unique moment in time. By removing non-essential elements from the landscape she draws the viewer into the painting, creating a personal connection with the subject.
The KAA’s “Gallery in Kent” is located at 21 South Main Street, Kent, CT 06757. Hours are 1:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. from Thursday through Sunday. The Elected Artist and Solo Show runs through June 17. For more information about this and other shows, visit KentArt.org online, or call the Gallery at (860) 937-3989 during show hours.
The next show at the gallery is the prestigious Presidents Juried Show opening on June 30. Karen Chase, Chair of the 95th celebration will give the second in a series of talks titled “Discovering Our Founders” on Saturday, June 16 at 3:00 p.m. at the KAA Gallery. The subject of her talk will be Rex Brasher, the artist many called “Connecticut’s Audubon.” Brasher is the only artist to paint every bird in North America. His complete collection of 874 paintings is owned by the State of Connecticut and is currently in Conservation Storage at UConn in Storrs, CT. Mrs. Chase will show examples of his work and discuss his life, his art and the ornithological importance of his work.
