Natural, Nutritional Pain Management
As chiropractors, we can assist our patients with multiple facets of their lives, including making healthier dietary choices. By providing simple dietary strategies and natural supplementation, we can help ensure that our patients get the appropriate nutrients required to support optimal health. A vast majority of whole foods possess enough nutrients to diminish inflammation and support the body’s natural healing processes; the only thing is you must eat them first! Additionally, I also recommend detoxifying cleanses that help maximize the benefits of new, healthy eating behaviors.
Though many patients consider that taking nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) periodically will “fix” their problem, they often don’t realize that these drugs fail to impact the underlying causes of their pain. Even if the pain is alleviated temporarily, the problem isn’t solved. Without intervention, they could also potentially worsen. By detoxifying the body and eating a healthy, natural diet, you can help alleviate problems that result in pain and inflammation.
As a chiropractor, I want to ensure that my patients are providing their bodies with everything required to successfully heal by filling in dietary gaps as follows:
The majority of a diet should be composed of organic, dark, leafy greens and brightly colored vegetables. Additionally, the consumption of organic fruit should be in limited quantities. Organic poultry and eggs are an excellent source of protein, whereas fish caught in the wild will provide omega-3 fatty acids. For cooking, I recommend unrefined, cold-pressed olive and coconut oils.
Organic and grass-fed red meat should be consumed in limited quantities (1x – 2x/month), as well as whole-grain products, dairy, farm-raised fish, refined olive and coconut oils, unrefined cane sugar, and natural sweeteners (honey, maple syrup, agave).
Patients should avoid the following foods altogether: refined grains (white bread, pastries, cookies, crackers, etc.) refined vegetable oils (soybean, canola, sunflower, etc.) refined sugars (soda, candy, ice cream, etc.) all fast food and junk food (anything heavily processed and refined); large amounts of red meat (beef, pork); and alcoholic and caffeinated beverages.
These nutritional guidelines can complement traditional chiropractic care by providing a proper groundwork for the treatments provided in office. When one of my patients chooses to consume a healthy, natural diet, filling in any gaps with recommended, naturally sourced supplementation, they often find it’s much easier with treatment to reduce their pain and obtain the desired results they were searching for.
