Earlier this year, The Grand Healthcare System was proud to announce the opening of The Butch Anderson Cardiopulmonary Center. Located within the Grand Rehabilitation and Nursing at River Valley building at 140 Main Street, Poughkeepsie, the new facility was dedicated on January 16 to honor one Dutchess County’s most prominent citizens.
Adrian “Butch” Anderson was born and raised in Dutchess County and has been serving the community since his appointment to Deputy Sheriff with the Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office in 1970. He served as Mayor of Pawling for eight years and was elected Chief Law Enforcement Officer for Dutchess County in 1999. However, Anderson’s list of accolades was nearly cut short when he was forced to undergo life-threatening heart surgery at the age of 38.
When he was told that he needed to receive heart surgery, Anderson faced a difficult choice. If he chose to undergo traditional surgery, his chances of survival would have been less than 50/50. If he opted for a new, experimental open-heart procedure, he faced riskier odds but would have a better chance of survival if the surgery was successful. Anderson opted for the experimental procedure, and the surgery was a complete success. The ordeal, however, would not end there, as he still had to endure an arduous rehabilitation period before finally being able to return home. In honor of Butch Anderson’s brave endeavor and survival, The Grand Rehabilitation and Nursing at River Valley was proud to name their Cardiopulmonary Center in his honor.
The Butch Anderson Cardiopulmonary Center offers patients a comfortable experience as they recover from a heart attack, bypass surgery, lung or cardiac surgery, or heart and lung disease complications. The 12-bed facility offers the latest in therapeutic technology, and personnel place extra emphasis on assisting with walking, dressing, communication, and assistive eating. The unit is staffed by a, interdisciplinary cardiopulmonary team, specialized cardiopulmonary trained nurses, Certified Nursing Assistants, and support staff, and offers 24-hour RN staffing and physician services. The facility also features daily exercise and support groups, as well as nursing rehab accommodations.
