Veteran’s Plaza on Charles Colman Blvd. will be receiving some new additions in the coming months thanks to American Legion Hasler-Kamp Post #215. The post is currently running a campaign that offers veterans a chance to purchase bricks adorning the sidewalk in front of the memorials found in the Village of Pawling. In addition to honoring the veterans for their service, the bricks will bring proceeds that will benefit Hasler-Kamp Post #215, which offers several valuable services to the community.
The 2018 brick campaign began last month and will be available until May 31. The bricks are available for sale exclusively to military veterans or those wishing to honor one, at a cost of $100 for the first brick, and $75 for each additional brick. The effort represents the second time that memorial bricks have been sold, with the original campaign taking place in 2012 in conjunction with the Pawling Community Foundation. New bricks have already begun filling up, and Legion representatives hope to receive more applications. “We still have plenty of room,” says Lou Musella, member and former Commander of Halsler-Kamp.
American Legion Hasler-Kamp Post #215 has been a cornerstone of the Pawling community for nearly 100 years. The post sponsors Cub Scout Pack 34 as well as Boys and Girls State, a program that teaches youths the rights, responsibilities, and privileges of being a citizen. Members of the Legion are also responsible for decorating veterans’ graves with American flags and supplying flags to local churches. The post also offers a college scholarship each year and presents Pawling’s annual Memorial Day Parade.
The post comprises roughly 50 members and operates on an annual budget of approximately $8,000. Included in this figure are the upkeep of the Veteran’s Cemetery, maintenance of ceremonial firearms, administrative expenses, and the post’s donations to Castle Point, USO, and Wounded Warrior organizations.
Hasler-Kamp Post #215 invites the Pawling community to help support them in their mission of continued public service. “We are deeply committed to our community,” says Musella. “The only way we are able to achieve our goals is through the generosity of the public.” Anyone who wishes to purchase a brick may send an email of interest to HaslerKampPost215@gmail.com for payment and placement details.
