Deadline for All Contest Entries Is April 15
The 10th annual Millbrook Literary Festival will take place on Saturday, May 19, 2018. Many special events are being planned for this year’s Festival, including a highlighted talk with Honorary Festival Chair Michael Korda. Korda is a bestselling biographer and novelist and editor-in-chief emeritus of Simon & Schuster.
Along with scheduling a series of engaging talks with authors for all ages, the Festival also sponsors two writing contests. The annual Scott Meyer Award is open to all Hudson/Harlem Valley writers aged 18 or over. This year the Festival will award a grand prize of $300 for an unpublished poem on any subject and two runners-up will each receive $150. The winning poem will be selected from among finalists by 2017/18 Dutchess County Poet Laureate Bettina “Gold” Wilkerson. Poet Gold is a spoken word performance artist, poet, songwriter, producer, and entrepreneur. She is the recipient of the 2016 Dutchess County Executive’s “Artivist” Award.
The Festival’s annual Young Writers Showcase will also be focusing on poetry. Children aged 8 to 18 can become a part of the Millbrook Literary Festival’s 10th
anniversary celebration by submitting an original poem to this year’s competition. Finalists will be included in the Young Writers Showcase 2018 online publication, and three gift cards to Merritt Bookstore will be awarded in two age groups: 8 to 12 and 13 to 18.
The deadline for all entries for both contests is April 15. Finalists will be notified by May 1, and the first place winner of both the Scott Meyer Award and the Young Writers Showcase will be announced at the Festival. The winner and runners-up for each contest must be present at the Millbrook Literary Festival on May 19 to receive their prizes.
