Bill Johnson, Town Council

Why are you running for this office?

To continue to help make Pawling a better place. I have called Pawling home for over 50 years. I have always been involved in the community and look forward to continuing to serve.

What are your qualifications for the position?

My biggest qualification is the inherent knowledge of the inner workings of the Town’s finances and departments. My background in the private sector is finance and budgeting. As finance director of a large Ford dealer, I am responsible for arranging millions of dollars of loans annually. I also am responsible for the dealerships compliance with regard to all aspects of lending as well as the motor vehicle department. I also serve on my church’s finance committee and council. During my time on the board, I have learned much as to how municipal finance, budgeting, and borrowing work.

What do you hope to accomplish, if elected?

My vision going forward is to aggressively repair and remove the buildings in our parks, both Lakeside and Murrow, which are in such dire need of repair. Sixteen years ago as a rookie councilman I voted in favor of purchasing Lakeside Park. The long process of funding and paying for the park is nearing an end. We can now look forward to investing those monies in the buildings and infrastructure without impacting your tax bill. It has been a long journey, but when done, Pawling will have the best recreational facilities of any town around. Truly making us the Pride of the Harlem Valley.

What is your educational background?

I am a 1975 graduate of Pawling High School. I attended Penn State University and have taken many courses on finance and compliance and attended the Association of Towns annual training in New York.

What else would you like voters to know about you – your family, pastimes, special interests or activities?

I have been happily married for over 33 years to my lovely wife, Lori. I have two sons, Keith and Christopher, and a beautiful granddaughter Briella! I love the outdoors, of which Pawling has plenty to offer. I enjoy hunting and fishing with my family and my Brittany Spaniel, Kara.
