Town Board Sets Date for Public Hearing on 2018 Budget

The Town Board convened for its second meeting of the month on Wednesday, October 11, at Town Hall. Items on the agenda included establishing a public hearing date for the 2018 budget, as well as the renewal of the town government’s contract with Sullivan Data Management and updates on the purchase of a new truck for the transfer station. Board members also voted to approve plans for the 2018 Community Development Block Grant.

The Town Board is currently at work on finalizing the 2018 budget and has moved the budget status from tentative to preliminary. A public hearing has been scheduled for Wednesday, November 1, at 7:00 p.m. during the next Board meeting. This hearing will give residents a forum to address any questions or concerns about budgetary matters for next year. The preliminary budget is available for review at the Town Clerk’s office in Pawling Town Hall.

The Board voted to renew the Town of Pawling’s contract with Sullivan Data Management for the town’s information technology and computer systems. Supervisor David Kelly cited a positive working relationship with Sullivan Data, as well as a price reduction of $1,500 from the previous year’s contract. The Board voted unanimously to approve the new contract for 2018.

Next on the agenda was a proposed resolution to purchase a new roll off truck for the Highway Department to be used at the town transfer station. The resolution would allow the Board to bond funds for the purchase of the truck in the amount of $166,912.72. The 2018 MAC truck in question will require for at a lower price than officials originally estimated. The purchase will ultimately be more cost efficient than renting a comparable vehicle. The resolution was approved by all Board members.

During the Town Board workshop meeting held on October 4, Village Mayor Robert Liffland and several other Village Trustees were in attendance to suggest the Town and Village combine their efforts for the 2018 Community Development Block Grant. This proposed shared services initiative would include repaving and extending areas of sidewalk spanning from West Main Street to Edward R. Murrow Park. The project would also include the construction of handicapped accessible bathroom facilities at the park. The Village of Pawling will be listed as the lead entity on the official grant proposal. Board members voted unanimously in favor of the project and expressed the hope that Dutchess County will award more funding as a result of the shared services initiative.

As the Whaley Lake Dam reconstruction project continues to move forward, Supervisor Kelly authorized the creation of a committee to interview candidates to fill the position of Owner’s Representative for the project. The individual selected for the position will act as a liaison between the construction engineers and the Town Board and provide regular reports of the progress of the project. Councilman William Johnson and Councilman Phil DeRosa were authorized to begin the interview process for candidates as soon as possible.

The next Town Board meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, November 1, at 7:00 p.m. at Town Hall, 160 Charles Colman Blvd.
