Haviland Hollow Wines
When Anthony and Diane Marino purchased the building at 2588 Route 22 in Patterson near the Putnam Diner, they had a daunting task before them. The couple would attempt to transform the former site of the Texas Taco restaurant into an entirely new enterprise. Three years later, their vision and dedication has paid off as Haviland Hollow Wines & Spirits is flourishing midway through its second year of operation.
After buying the building in 2014, the Marinos began a two-year process of renovating the structure to suit the needs of the new business. “I did about seventy-five percent of the renovations myself,” says Marino, “ and for anything I couldn’t do personally, I used local contractors. That was very important to me.” When the process was complete in early 2016, the building was redone with raised ceilings, a new septic system, and an entirely refinished interior. Once they were approved for a New York State liquor license, Haviland Hollow Wines & Spirits opened for business in March 2016.
Haviland Hollow prides itself on providing a selection of wines that will satisfy a wide range of tastes. In addition to traditional French, Italian, and Spanish wines, the Marinos offer special varieties of organic wine and low sugar, low calorie “Fitness Wine.” Another unique offering comes in the form of their selection of Ninety+Cellars wines. These bottles come from renowned vineyards worldwide that have a surplus, allowing growers to distribute top quality wines at a fraction of the original price. The establishment also offers a full compliment of spirits, including an excellent selection of Bourbons including Angel’s Envy, William Wolf, and Woodford Reserve.
The Marinos pride themselves on evolving their selection to suit the tastes of their customers. “We’re just trying to get a better feel for what people want,” says Diane Marino. “We encourage tastings and special orders.” Although wine and spirit tastings at the store are not done on a scheduled basis, they are offered frequently from distributors both large and small. Recent offerings have come from Taconic Distillery (Stanfordville, NY,) Mysto Mead (Carmel, NY) and Brotherhood Winery (Washingtonville, NY). Wine tastings are more common in fall and spring, but are offered year round.
Haviland Hollow Wines & Spirits has been an ambitious learning experience for the Marinos. It has also become a family affair. Their son and daughter also assist in the business, managing social media. “Hopefully this is something we can pass down to our kids,” says Anthony. With a solid foundation for the future, the Marinos are eagerly looking ahead. “We’ve made a lot of friends here; it’s all been positive and getting better every day,” adds Diane.
