Joan Gouvernale, 83 | Pawling

 

Joan B. Governale (83) of Pawling, NY, passed away peacefully on May 16, 2017, in Fort Myers FL.

Joan was born in New York, NY, to Marshall W. Bexley and Anna Ragiel Bexley on August 3, 1933. She married her beloved husband, Joseph A. Governale, on May 24, 1959, at Sacred Heart Church in New York, NY. She loved spending her many summers on Whaley Lake (Holmes, NY) before making it her permanent residence in 1965. Joan and Joe purchased a home in Pawling in 1969, where she raised her four children. In 2002, they purchased a permanent home in Fort Myers, where they spent their winters.

 

Joan is survived by her brother, Robert J. Bexley, and his wife, Joan, of Holmes, her loving children Lois J. Rimany and her husband, Robert, of Cape Coral, FL; Janice L. Maerling and her husband, Robert, of Pawling; Joseph R. Governale and his wife, Edna, of Pawling; Thomas M. Governale of Pawling; ten grandchildren, and four great grandchildren.

 

Joan is preceded in death by her loving husband, Joseph A. Governale; her parents, Marshall and Anna Ragiel Bexley; her sister, Dorothy Bexley Arena; and her nephew, Stephen J. Arena.

 

A loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend, Joan loved spending time with family and friends, all of which loved her quick wit and sense of humor. Joan also enjoyed playing golf, reading, and relaxing outside while doing her many crossword puzzles. She will be greatly missed by all.

 

A Mass of Christian Burial was held at St. John the Evangelist Church on Saturday, May 20. Joan always said, “Charity begins at home”; therefore, in lieu of flowers, please make a donation to someone you know who needs it most.

Stanley Mersand, 70 | Pawling

 

Stanley Howard Mersand, 70, passed away peacefully on the evening of Friday, May 26, at Regional Hospice in Danbury, CT.

 

Stan was a lifelong political enthusiast, often involved with the Village of Pawling at various levels. His last position was on the Village Board, and as Deputy Mayor. He also ran the Thomas E. Dewey Center in Pawling, dedicated to the life and career of his political mentor, and served as Dutchess County Historian for many years.

 

Stan spent more than 30 years as a history teacher at Carmel High School in Carmel, NY, before retiring and teaching at various area colleges. As the titular head of “The Heart Gang” – a band of patients from the Health Quest Heart Center in Poughkeepsie – Stan loved to plan social events for the group.

 

As a young man, Stan proudly served in the United States Army as a forward observer and intelligence analyst in Vietnam. The second son of Julius (d.) and Hilda Mersand (née Liffland) (d.) of Pawling, Stan was predeceased by his sister, Jennise, of Burbank, CA, and his beloved dogs King, Bootsie, Captain, Tootsie, Mollie, and Boo. He is survived by his wife, Christine (née Baresich), his son, Michael, daughter, Rebecca, and dog, Scout, all of Pawling; his brother, Barry, nephew Alex, and niece Jenny, of Poughquag; Aunt Mary “Dolly” Liffland of Pawling, and numerous cousins throughout the area.

 

He is finally at rest . . . which would really annoy him, since he always liked to be busy.

 

Memorial calling hours were held at the Horn & Thomes, Inc., Funeral Home in Pawling, Saturday, June 10.

In accordance with his wishes, a memorial party in honor of his life was held by the family following the calling hours at Edward R. Murrow Park in Pawling.

 

In lieu of flowers, he wished that donations be made to the Hudson Valley SPCA, Disabled American Veterans, The American Legion, and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Patrick “Pete” Feery, 87 | Pawling

 

Patrick J. “Pete” Feery, 87, a resident of Pawling since 1968 and formerly of Queens, NY, passed away at home on Sunday, June 4, 2017, surrounded by his family.

 

Born in Manhattan on October 29, 1929, he was the son of the late Patrick and Sarah (Harte) Feery.  He served in the US Army during the Korean War, and on January 20, 1962, he married Frances Ventrice at St. Francis of Assisi Church in the Bronx, NY.  Pete received his bachelor’s degree from Pace University and was a systems analyst at PepsiCo before retiring.  He was a member of St. John the Evangelist Church in Pawling, Pawling Knights of Columbus, and a past member of the Pawling Lions Club.

 

Pete is survived by his devoted wife, Frances, at home, loving children Angela Nash, and her husband, Steven, of Pawling; Patricia Feery of White Plains; Catherine Brunow of Pawling; Frances Davis of Dover Plains; Joseph Feery of Pawling; daughter-in-law, Elizabeth Feery of Vero Beach; grandchildren Jonathan, Andrew, Kevin, and Cara Nash, Zachary, Nicholas, and Meaghan Brunow, Harper Feery, Kayla Davis, and Rileigh Feery; brothers, William and his wife, Barbara, of Cedarhurst, NY, and Martin and his wife, Maria, of Southport, NC, and nieces and nephews.  He is predeceased by his son Patrick, who passed away on May 14, 2000, and two brothers, John and Michael Feery.

 

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at St. John’s Church, 39 East Main St, Pawling, on Wednesday, June 7.  Burial followed in St. John’s Cemetery, East Street, Pawling.

Margaret Daly, 73 | Pawling

 

Margaret M. Daly, 73, passed away Sunday, June 18, 2017, at Vassar Brothers Medical Center, Poughkeepsie, NY.

 

A long-time resident of the Pawling/Beekman, NY, area, Margaret was born in Mt. Kisco, NY, on February 7, 1944, one of three children born to Walter and Gertrude (McGarry) Cushing.

 

Margaret earned her nursing degree at Dutchess Community College and worked as a registered nurse at Wassaic Developmental Center in Wassaic, NY, and was a member of the C.S.E.A.

 

She is survived by her long-time significant other, the love of her life, James T. Lennon of Poughquag, NY; her three daughters, Deborah (Tim) Weisel of Patterson, NY, Jeanne (Patrick) Calamari of Poughkeepsie, and Karin Elizabeth Millard of Pawling; six grandchildren, Jeffrey Weisel, Justin and Alyssa Calamari, and Kimber Rose, Don, and Michael Millard; her brother, Charles Kleese, of Poughkeepsie; and several loving nieces and nephews.

 

Margaret is predeceased by her mother, Gertrude, her stepfather, Charles Kleese, Sr.; her two brothers, Winston and Garath Cushing; and her beloved furry family members, Ruthie, Sammy, and Dumphy.

A memorial service will be conducted on July 8, 2017, at 9:00 a.m. at the Christ Church Memorial Garden on Quaker Hill, 1 Church Road, Pawling, NY 12564.

Yolande Chasse, 81 | Carmel

 

Yolande Chasse, 81, passed away Wednesday, June 7, 2017, at Vassar Brothers Medical Center, Poughkeepsie, NY.

 

A resident of Carmel, NY, since 1964, she was born in Quebec City, Canada, on August 22, 1935, to Mendoza and Anna Marie Rousseau. Yolande enjoyed spending time with her family, making them “f” cheesecake and Chinese noodles. She loved playing cards and doing arts and crafts; she was a life-long follower of QVC, and an avid NY Rangers and Mets fan.

 

She is survived by her son Mario Chasse and his wife, Ella, of Hopewell Junction; two daughters, Linda Ritter and her husband, Bob, of Wappingers Falls, and Diane Ferris and her husband, Kevin, of Poughkeepsie; her brother Yvan Rousseau and his wife, Jackie, and sister, Rolande Arsenault, all of Canada; her former husband, Robert Chasse of Pawling; six grandchildren, Stephanie, Nicole, Kevin, Robert, Rebecca, and Dana; two great-grandchildren, Charlie Rose and Daniella Rae; and many nieces, nephews, and friends.

 

A memorial service was conducted at the Horn & Thomes, Inc., Funeral Home on Friday, June 9. Burial took place on Saturday, June 10, at St. John’s Cemetery, Pawling.

Albert Bogert, Jr., 87 | Pawling

 

Albert J. Bogert, Jr., 87, a 16-year resident of Pawling, passed away at Westchester Medical Center, Valhalla, NY, Saturday, June 3, 2017.

 

Born in Brooklyn, NY, on July 10, 1929, he was the son of Albert J. Bogert, Sr., and Mildred (Lohrman) Bogert. Mr. Bogert served in the US Army during the Korean War and was an accountant at IBM in Armonk, NY, and attended The Mission Church.

 

He is predeceased by his wife, the former Caryl Lillian Pearson, who passed away April 27, 2000.

 

He is survived by his two sons, Wayne Bogert and his wife, Audrey, of Pawling, and Bruce Bogert and his wife, Marcia, of Beaverton, OR; his daughter Gail Bogert and her husband, C. King Castle, of Macungie, PA; his sister, Joan Brigham of Windsor, CT; 11 grandchildren; and 8 great-grandchildren.

 

Family and friends gathered at the Horn & Thomes, Inc., Funeral Home, 83 East Main Street, Pawling, on the morning of Friday, June 9, 2017, where a service was conducted; burial was private.
